Kathy Rollheiser started Planet Literacy in 1999 to fill a need.
In the public system her caseload did not permit her to work with
one student at a time, even though research indicated this was the
only way for some children to develop their reading potential. Her
teaching experience includes 18 years in the public school system
as a teacher for children with Learning Disabilities, and as a tutor
for hearing challenged students at the former Cariboo College. She
has worked with adults and children with hearing challenges, brain
injury, A.D.H.D., Global Developmental Delay, Mental Challenges,
English as a Second Language, and Severe Learning Disabilities.
She is an affiliate of the Calgary Academy and has contributed to
the research of the Literacy Links Program. Kathy has specialized
training and experience in the LiPS Program, the Visualizing and
Verbalizing Program, and the Literacy Links Phonemic Processing
Program. She has a diploma in Teaching Speakers of Other Languages
from Vancouver Community College, a Bachelor of Education from the
University of Saskatchewan, and a Master's Degree in Diagnostic
and Prescriptive Teaching for students with Learning Disabilities
from the University of Victoria.
Decoding Problems
The Literacy Links Program is a clinically proven program for
people who have trouble sounding out words, but can understand text
if someone reads it to them. These people may lack phonemic
awareness.
Comprehension
Problems
The Visualizing and Verbalizing Program is a clinically proven
program for people who have trouble remembering and understanding
what they hear and read. Often these people can read the words fairly
well, but they don't understand what they are reading.
Pre
and Post testing indicates an average gain in reading skill of between
one and two years, after just three weeks!
Screening
tests are administered before acceptance into the clinics, to confirm
that the student is a good candidate, and has a good chance for
success.
These
reading clinics are not just for children. Planet Literacy has successfully
taught many adults to improve their reading skills. Our clinics
are discreet and one on one. Anyone can improve their reading with
the right tools and the right attitude.
Planet
Literacy receives referrals from physicians, psychologists, speech
pathologists, and teachers. |
