"I
DON'T KNOW HOW TO READ THAT WORD"

What is Phonemic Awareness?
The brains of fluent readers rapidly translate the alphabetic code
into the words we use and understand when we speak. To struggling
readers, this process is not automatic. They cannot translate letters
into phonemes, or, the individual sounds of speech. A primary cause
of reading and spelling problems is difficulty in judging sounds
within words. Phonemic Awareness is the ability to break words down into their smallest sounds, blend sounds together to make words, and track sounds in words as
they are deleted, added and transposed.
The
Literacy Links Program offers one on one instruction to address
this type of reading problem, over a three week time period. Each
student receives 30 hours of private instruction, from a trained
clinician. The student practices reading, spelling, fluency and
speed improvement, and reads from a variety of reading materials.
The student is expected to complete twenty to thirty minutes of
homework daily while in the program.
What
are people saying about the Literacy Links Clinic?
"My son was miserable. He was in grade 10, and couldn't read
a menu in a restaurant. He was teased at school, and had to leave
the class for help all the time. After just one week in the program
we noticed a difference. After three weeks, he was able to read
a newspaper, and now he loves to bake cookies for us because he
can read the recipes!"
